Kuala Lumpur, 26 July 2008 – UCSI today held its 21st convocation with 842 graduates taking home their scrolls, presented to them by UCSI’s Chancellor, Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Abdul Rahman Arshad. Former Education Minister, Tan Sri Dato’ Musa Bin Mohamad was conferred the Honorary Doctorate in Education, in recognition of his contributions to Malaysian education. Faculty members, Dr. Hon Wei Min (Applied Sciences) and Dr. Anupama B.K. (Medical Sciences) were conferred Associate Professorships, while Dr. Hikmat Said S. Al-Salim (Engineering, Architecture and Built Environment) was conferred his Professorship. A “first” achieved this year was the nomination of First Class Honours Psychology student, Alicia Lim Li Shia, as class valedictorian while it was also the first time that all the graduating First Class Honours students, numbering 11, were women. This year’s convocation also saw UCSI graduating its first batch of Masters of Science in Logistics Management students. Richard Wang Kheng Hwa says, “I chose this course as it was related to my current job, and after searching through the various university brochures, I found that only UCSI offers this course.” Concurring with him was international student, Komohafē Temitpe, “For practical reasons I wanted a course in this field, and I was glad to find out that UCSI was offering it.” In a short interview after the event, Tan Sri Dato’ Musa emphasised the importance of training current graduates to be employers. “We have to train students to be employers and not employees. When all graduates end up being employees we end up having such a high unemployment rate. The time has come for us to seriously position our graduates to be entrepreneurs.” Tan Sri Musa’s words amplify UCSI’s core strategic goals of inculcating Employability, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (E3) skills among students. When asked for his advice to graduating students of 2008, he stressed the importance of improving oneself. “It is through improving yourself, that you in turn will prosper the country,” he says. Assoc. Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Dr. Hon Wei Min, who was conferred the Associate Professorship said that she hopes to further expand the faculty, and improve upon what has already been established. “I am hoping to change the current teaching style to one that is more activity and project-based, as well as to encourage more research among the students and faculty members.” She added, “Students from Applied Sciences should not perceive that they are only meant to stay in laboratories. There are many other fields that they can pursue.” After being conferred his Professorship, Dr. Hikmat Said S. Al. Salim, UCSI’s Head of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, talked about his feelings after successfully setting up two new courses at UCSI, the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) in Chemical Engineering (Petrochemical) and Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) in Petroleum Engineering. “When the courses were successfully set up, I was teary and emotional, exactly the same feeling I felt when I witnessed the birth of my children,” he said. Dr. Hikmat added by saying that he will do his best to produce first-rate graduates from UCSI. In her speech, valedictorian Alicia spoke of success not belonging to only those who have been outstanding in their academics. “Success also belongs to those who have gone through these few years faced with challenges, distractions and setbacks, and yet have displayed great endurance and determination in completing their diploma and degree programmes.” The graduating students came from 5 faculties representing 29 out of the 46 programmes that UCSI currently offers.

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 March 2022: UCSI University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to establish a strategic collaboration on Fifth Generation (5G) technology research and application. The signing of this MoU will provide many collaboration opportunities for both parties, including in the development of micro-credential courses in areas such as Digital Forensics, Bioinformatics, Big Data Analytics, and Cyber Security. Under the MoU Agreement, MCMC will utilise UCSI Poll Centre and Tan Sri Omar Abdul Rahman Centre for Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy Studies to conduct surveys and research activities. MCMC will also leverage UCSI Expert Resources in the areas of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as well as other forms of academic collaboration. UCSI University will gain access to experienced industry professionals with the appointment of MCMC Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) as Industry Advisory Panel (IAP) as members under the UCSI University Academic Programme Board of Studies (BOS). MCMC SMEs could share their experience and knowledge with students as Adjunct Lecturers and Professors under the appointment. “Educators need to see innovation as a must in the teaching and learning processes because innovation can not only save time but also increase student interest in learning. Innovation requires educators and students to be knowledgeable, skilled, analytical, and willing to work on something new. “These traits are indispensable in today’s educational world to produce students who are ready to confront the challenges of IR 4.0, 5G, and subsequent revolutions to come our way. Therefore, the UCSI University’s micro-credential courses will aid in future-proofing graduates while re-skilling and upskilling the Malaysian workforce to thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0),” said Professor Datuk Ir Ts Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir, UCSI University Vice-Chancellor, and UCSI Group CEO. This MoU will also highlight collaborative efforts between both parties to support the country’s aspirations to be a technologically advanced nation. Meanwhile, MCMC said: “this collaboration with UCSI and others in academia will pave the way in readying our digital talents for digital leadership in technology and innovation. The Commission will work closely with the industry and the academia in ensuring the entire workforce is digital-ready.” Dr Siti Hamisah signed on behalf of UCSI Education Sdn Bhd, while Dato’ Dr Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek, the Executive Chairman represented MCMC. The Signing Ceremony was witnessed by UCSI University’s representative, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Internationalisation (Kuala Lumpur Campus), Professor Datuk Dr Rohana Yusof, FASc, and MCMC’s Chief Financial and Strategy Officer, Nor Fadhilah Mohd Ali. The collaboration will enable both UCSI University and MCMC to conduct joint seminars, conferences, and workshops in the area of ICT. Students will gain internship opportunities via the UCSI University Internship Co-Op Programme with MCMC for co-operative placement. This will enable students to gain valuable work experience and exposure under the programme. This MoU further reflects UCSI University’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 9 to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation, and foster innovation.

UCSI University’s Institute of Languages primarily offers English Language Courses designed to equip university-bound students with the language skills necessary for academic programmes. Additionally, it provides intensive English language programmes to international students and learners who seek to improve their language proficiency while travelling in Malaysia. Our learners originate from various parts of the world. Increasingly, the Institute is approached to assist in upskilling in-service teachers and company workers. There are plans to develop more language courses, such as Mandarin, Malay, Japanese and Korean, to cater to students’ learning needs soon.

KUALA LUMPUR, 2 April 2007 – UCSI recently signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with two private universities and a training centre in Syria and Jordan. According to its Associate Vice President for Special Projects, Dr. Mahmoud Almsafir, the MoUs were signed with the Syrian International Private University for Science and Technology, Mamoun Private University for Science and Technology (MUST) and Mamoun International Corporation. “There was strong interest shown by our counterparts to discuss the possibility of recruiting professors from Malaysia, and sending their students and staff to UCSI during the summer holidays,” he said. The president of Mamoun Private University for Science and Technology (MUST), Dr. Maoun Halak, for example, immediately requested for professors and associate professors in Business Administration and Computer Engineering to be deployed to their institution. “They need our assistance and know-how to establish a multimedia faculty in their university,” Dr. Mahmoud said. Mamoun International Corporation, which operates a major training centre in Syria, organises and conducts between 400 to 500 different courses. “Its president has expressed interest in running these courses here in Malaysia,” Dr. Mahmoud added. UCSI was the only Malaysian private educational institution which participated in the Educational and Training Exhibition (ETEX), besides University of Malaya. According to Dr. Mahmoud, the responses from the Syrian students and their parents were very good.
